About the role

Anglican Diocesan Services is seeking a Communications Officer to join our organisation on a part-time basis. Based in Canberra, ACT 2600, this role is central to our mission of effectively communicating the values, activities, and impact of our organisation to diverse audiences. As Communications Officer, you will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic communications initiatives that strengthen our reputation, engage our community, and support the achievement of our organisational objectives. Employment Type: Part-time (up to 3 days per week)

The Communications Officer is a journalism-focused role responsible for media relations, public affairs, and content development for the Diocese of Canberra & Goulburn. Working closely with the Bishop, Primate, and communications team, the role supports the Church's public voice through storytelling, media engagement, publications, and strategic communications that reflect the mission and values of the Anglican Church.

Key Responsibilities

Manage media enquiries, interviews, media releases, and stakeholder relationships.

  • Research, write, and edit news stories, feature articles, and content for print and digital platforms.
  • Produce content for diocesan publications, including The Anglican News.
  • Support speeches, statements, events, and public communications for the Bishop and Primate.
  • Identify and promote stories that reflect the Diocese's mission and community impact.
  • Assist with media monitoring, issues management, and crisis communications.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, professionalism, and editorial integrity.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience in journalism, communications, media relations, or public affairs.
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field; or
  • Significant equivalent journalism experience.

Other Requirements

  • Understanding of and commitment to the Anglican Church's mission and values.
  • National Police Check, Working With Vulnerable People Check, and current Driver Licence.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
